Politics has a way of surprising people.
Few believed Joseph Estrada, a movie icon, would become President. Fewer believed Robin Padilla would top the 2022 senatorial race with nearly 27 million votes. Yet both happened.
Now imagine another scenario. If Vice President Sara Duterte were to be convicted in her impeachment trial and become ineligible to seek higher office, the political landscape would change dramatically.
One question would inevitably emerge:
Who inherits the Duterte base?
Robin Padilla’s name would almost certainly be part of that conversation.
Unlike Estrada, whose presidency was cut short by political turmoil, Padilla has spent his Senate term building relationships, defending his positions on the Senate floor, and establishing himself as one of the most recognizable allies of the Duterte camp.
Whether one agrees with his positions or not, he has remained consistently loyal—a quality that many Duterte supporters highly value.
His celebrity status is another advantage. Name recall remains one of the strongest assets in Philippine elections, and Padilla already possesses what many aspiring candidates spend years trying to build: nationwide familiarity and a loyal following.
That does not automatically make him the strongest presidential candidate. A presidential race depends on many factors—organization, coalition-building, policy platform, campaign resources, and the political environment at the time.
Still, dismissing Robin Padilla simply because he came from show business would ignore Philippine political history. Voters have repeatedly shown that celebrity, authenticity, and perceived loyalty can carry enormous electoral weight.

Whether Robin Padilla eventually seeks the presidency remains uncertain. But if the Duterte movement needs a standard-bearer and Sara Duterte is no longer in the picture, it would not be surprising if many supporters begin looking at Senator Robin Padilla as one of the most viable options.
In Philippine politics, today’s “impossible” often becomes tomorrow’s headline.
