Today we filed two resolutions, calling for inquiries on the price of electricity and the price of fuel.
Thee are both basic needs for everyone, especially our fisherfolk. Even with the assistance provided, these increase in prices have caused an undue and almost impossibly heavy burden.
These resolutions are a small step in trying to get to the roots of the problem. It’s not sexy, it’s not a soundbite, but it attacks the problem where it should be attacked – at its roots and source.
We have one of the most expensive electricity in the world, and while system losses are a part of it, this does not adequately address the underlying problem.
It is even worse when the solution being presented to us – nuclear power – was already done before. We have a power plant that has never produced even 1 watt of electricity. At this point, we simply cannot afford to make another 2 Billion Dollar Mistake.
As to fuel prices, while there are global factors to consider, price increases appear to be extremely disproportionate to decreases when the price of crude oil goes down. The price off fuel and electricity not only affect the lives of every Filipino directly, but also compounds as these are used in almost every business.
It’s high time that we cut through the noise and try to address not just the symptoms but the root cause of these problems.
Daghang Salamat
PPP Partylist Rep. Harold Duterte
