The latest Pulse Asia presidential preference survey offers more than just a snapshot of voter sentiment. It sends a political message that those in power would ignore at their own peril.

With Vice President Sara Duterte emerging as the first choice of 49% of respondents nationwide, the survey suggests that she continues to command broad public support nearly two years before the 2028 presidential elections.

Her strongest numbers come from Mindanao (87%), while she also leads nationally by a wide margin over former Vice President Leni Robredo (26%) and Raffy Tulfo (14%).

It bears repeating: surveys are not elections.

They measure public opinion at a particular moment, not the final outcome. Voters can and do change their minds.But surveys are valuable because they reveal how the public feels today.

If these numbers hold any lesson, it is that political support cannot simply be dismissed as personality politics or regional loyalty. Public sentiment is often shaped by people’s day-to-day experiences—the cost of living, public safety, government services, and confidence in national leadership.

For the administration, the survey should be viewed not as a political attack but as constructive feedback. When voters consistently express support for an alternative leader, it is worth asking why.

History has shown that governments that ignore public frustration instead of addressing it often pay a political price. Winning the communications battle is never a substitute for winning public confidence.

The 2028 election remains far away. Alliances will change, candidates may still emerge, and unforeseen events will reshape the political landscape.Yet the Pulse Asia survey delivers one unmistakable message: many Filipinos are already looking ahead, and a significant portion of them see Sara Duterte as their preferred next president.

Whether those numbers rise or fall will depend not only on the opposition, but also on how the current administration responds to the concerns of the Filipino people in the months and years ahead.
